We are deeply committed to providing sound advice and are here to guide you through every part of the process.

We have helped many people overcome obstacles and find the right solutions to immigration challenges. At our law firm, we welcome and assist immigration clients of all national origins. We help family members and employers, as well as people seeking entry to the U.S. or adjustment of status.

We bring empathy along with skill to your case. U.S. immigration laws are federal laws, so location is no barrier for clients far from our law office in Greenbelt, Maryland.

We have ample experience to assist our clients when your immigration matter intersects with family law or divorce law. In addition to the family-related immigration matters mentioned above, we also provide legal assistance for international adoptions, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) petitions for victims of domestic violence, and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) for children who have been abused, neglected or abandoned.

Frequently Asked Questions About Family Immigration

Our immigration clients often have questions about bringing family members to the United States, so we have compiled answers to help you understand the process.

How long does it take to bring my spouse/family member to the U.S.?

Processing times vary significantly based on your relationship to the family member and their country of origin. Immediate relatives of U.S. citizens (spouses, unmarried children under 21 and parents) typically receive priority processing, with cases often completed within 12 to 18 months. However, other family categories may face longer waits due to annual visa limitations.

Can I apply for a green card for my parents or siblings?

U.S. citizens can petition for both parents and siblings, while permanent residents cannot petition for these family members. Parent petitions for U.S. citizens over 21 years old are processed relatively quickly as immediate relatives. Sibling petitions face much longer processing times due to annual visa caps and high demand. The wait times for siblings can exceed 10-15 years depending on the country of origin, making early filing crucial if you plan to petition for brothers or sisters.

What documents do I need for a family-based immigration petition?

Family immigration petitions require extensive documentation to prove the qualifying relationship and eligibility. Essential documents include birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce decrees, passports, financial support evidence and proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent residence status. We help clients gather all necessary documentation and obtain certified translations when required. Having complete, accurate documentation from the beginning prevents delays.

What happens if my family immigration petition gets denied?

Petition denials can often be addressed through appeals, motions to reopen or refiling with additional evidence. We carefully analyze denial reasons and develop strategies to overcome the obstacles identified by immigration officials. Some denials result from missing documentation or technical errors that can be corrected, while others may require more comprehensive legal arguments or additional evidence.

Can my fiancé(e) work in the U.S. on a K-1 visa?

K-1 visa holders cannot work in the United States until they apply for and receive employment authorization after arriving. They must marry their U.S. citizen petitioner within 90 days and then apply for adjustment of status to permanent residence. Work authorization typically becomes available during the adjustment process, usually within a few months after marriage and filing the appropriate applications.
